On August 20, 2012 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a warning on mushrooms that may have been contaminated with listeria and, today, an expansion has been issued to include additional products.

The CFIA and Champ’s Mushrooms are warning consumers not to consume the brand’s Sliced White Mushrooms (products listed below) because they may be contaminated with listeria. Food contaminated with listeria can lead to listeriosis – a harmful and potentially fatal foodborne illness. Symptoms of listeriosis include high fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea. This illness is particularly dangerous for elderly individuals, children and those with weakened immune systems. It is also incredibly dangerous for pregnant women and can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or stillbirth.

The products affected by this recall are Champ’s Mushrooms Sliced White Mushrooms, Product of Canada. They are sold in 227 g (8oz) packs that bear the UPC code 0 33383 67600 5. The “packed on” date is ”PO 10AUG2012″ or “PO 11AUG2012.”

These products were sold in British Columbia and Alberta but may have been distributed and sold in other provinces as well.

Consumers with questions or concerns regarding this particular recall can contact the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 /TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).

On August 14, Compliments Mushrooms were recalled due to listeria concerns as well. You can see the details of that recall here.
