CCE-Steuben County to host mushroom growing classes April 27

Bath, N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Steuben County will host two mushroom growing classes at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on April 27 in the 4-H Building at the Steuben County Fairgrounds, 15 E. Washington St., Bath.
Mushrooms are unique crops that can easily be grown in backyards for home consumption or for local markets. The edible and nutritional quality of mushrooms growing under natural shade on logs is remarkable and more sustainable than store-bought mushrooms often grown indoors in climate-controlled environments.
The classes will cover the basics of outdoor mushroom growing, including their relationship to healthy forest management. Participants will learn how easy it is to grow shiitake, oyster, lions mane and stropharia mushrooms at home or on the farm. Each participant will receive a shiitake inoculated log.
The cost for each class is $30 per person and registration is required by April 22. For more information or to register, call 607-664-2300, email sms64@cornell.edu or visit www.putknowledgetowork.com.
