Germany: Mushroom production increased

2012-10-27 15:130FreshPlaza
From figures of the management of the German BDC it appears that the German mushroom growers produced (provisionally) 62,000 tons of mushrooms in 2012, as announced on the German website Gabot.de. Of this 54,000 tons was sold as fresh mushrooms and 8,000 tons went to processing. With this the quantity produced remains stable compared to last year, despite some producers increasing their capacity. There were namely also growers, who stopped their mushroom production.

Because of the very bad quality of straw last year, which together with horse manure is the growth substratum for mushrooms, yields this year and last year were slightly worse than generally expected.

The mushroom is and remains the most important fungus. The other fungi, such as king oyster mushroom, common oyster mushroom and shiitake are increasing in popularity as well. The total production in Germany is estimated at about 2,000 tons.
