Free class on wild mushrooms is Nov. 3 in Salem

Learn the ins and outs, as well as the dos and don’ts of wild mushrooms on Nov. 3 in Salem.
 
Ron Exeter, a Bureau of Land Management botanist, will teach an “Introduction to Fungi” class that will focus on proper collection techniques, identification and the bureau’s policies about harvesting mushrooms on public land.
 
With the help of examples collected by members of the Willamette Valley Mushroom Society, you also will learn about different fungi found in out forests as well as how to recognize edible mushroom varieties.
 
The session is 9 a.m. to noon at the BLM office, 1717 Fabry Road SE (off Commercial Street S across from the Safeway gas station).
 
If you’re curious about mushrooms that you find on your walks or in your yard, bring a sample to add to the study collection.
 
The class is free, but registration is required by calling Exeter at (503) 315-5963.
