AB: The types of container suitable for growing edible fungi are briefly surveyed. Substrates described include compressed straw blocks for Pleurotus eryngii, straw in a plastic container (as used for growing cress) for Flammulina velutipes, wooden blocks for Tremella fuciformis and Lentinus edodes, straw in glass jars for Agrocybe aegerita, and straw in plastic bags for various species. Growth of fruiting bodies was better on the sides of a cylindrical container than on a flat surface. Various types of apparatus for constructing cylinders and blocks of substrate, and for providing them with aeration and warmth while the crops (particularly of Pleurotus ostreatus) are produced, are described and illustrated.
